Strike at the core values of Physical Education

     Pasi Sahlberg is a great Finnish educator whose book “Finnish Lessons” promoted the predictable  vision of a nation that succeeded without high-stakes testing, without standardized testing as we know it . He scribed that highly educated teachers who had wide latitude and self-sufficiency in their classrooms and who liaised with their colleagues to do what was best for their students has proven to be fruitful. He wrote that a national school system that values the arts, physical activity, and play are preparing a platform for a better society.  The OECD called it the best school system in the world!

     The Trinidad & Tobago education system is in need of reform. The Curriculum committee should seek fellowship with local institutions of higher learning and to engage international avenues as a pathway to guide the implementation of the reform needed to restructure the system. What are the available options for students whose education efforts have failed them, whose individual efforts have not been researched for remediation? Strike at the core values of physical education within the artery of the national school curriculum.

     Destroy the band aid, practice preventive medicine. Institute prevention  surveillance, and management into the system. Build the nation from the ground up.  Strike at  the core values of physical education in the schools.  Start from kindergarten and move upward. Stop physical information and consume physical education in its proper perspectives.  Rewrite the colonial prescription; engage a sustainable development platform as an effervescent energy.

     Physical information as is required to pass the CXC is not good enough. Physical education which creates an interactive coherent understanding of the dynamics behind health and wellness issues and problems to include action competence with positive enhancing consequences.
The days for lackluster calisthenics followed by dodge ball are over. This behavior establishes the depth of training received by the Physical education teacher with a need for creativity. The institution of interdisciplinary approaches to physical education must be seriously considered because of their symbiosis relationship.

     UWI’s Health & Wellness Researchers claimed that 20 percent of our youth are obese and 30 percent are overweight. This alert warning prognostication laments our school educational system as preparing the market for “Long John Silver’s” Treasure Island amputees by the time teenagers become adults.
 Diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol filled children are crowding our hospitals.  Absenteeism is invading our schools. The corporate workplace is combating unhealthy dialogue with unions, the Ministry of education is experiencing repeated forms of sick leave employees daily, the Ministry of Health recorded that the 1 out of every 8 adults is suffering from diabetes. Legs are being cut off because of this.

      Adults are walking, running, jogging, exercising more now than say 10 years ago when they attended school. Our Physical education teachers must become more vocal, more proactive, more involved.  They must stop riding the back of the bus. Let their voices be heard. Remove the Physical Education Stigma! Confiscate the Mental Narrative!

     Today's Physical Education programs should among other developmental stimuli require its Practitioners to monitor students’ heart rate, teach them about nutrition and wellness, and the benefits of exercise.  Studies indicate that children should perform at least 15minutes of moderate to vigorous play activity daily.

     The nation’s Schools are pressured to improve student test scores. The Curriculum specialist in the Ministry of Education does not plan for a healthy body to produce a healthy mind. Hence, they question the core value of physical education in the curriculum as a contributor to a healthy national economy.
The belief that time spent on Physical education compromises academic performance is false. Current research at Oregon state university suggests that physical activities help to promote better learning and wellness ultimately produces improved concentration.

     Steward Trost of the Department Nutrition and Exercise Science at Oregon State University claims that “physical activity can help a child in the formative years / short term can also help students’ behavioral, cognitive, and physical mobility in later life.”  Check the visual performance laboratories of the Savannahs and Parks in T&T between 4 pm – 8 pm daily.  What do you see and conclude?  You see what certain elements of society did not do as children they are trying to do as adults. They enjoy what they are doing. There is camaraderie. Dedication, there are spurts of a competitive spirits emerging from the trenches of their souls. There was stop and go. There was “I can’t do it, Yes you can” dialogue going on within the bosoms of friendship and care.

     There were the behavioral classes in the visible human experience. Their personal space is engaging. They created their own performing community which is looking after each other. They  showcase themselves. This transpires at a greater cost and much sacrificial labor. Participants are now walking and jogging for a longer life span. Yet the colonial mentality continues to father our thoughts. Socio-economics and social stratification continues to influence our educational stratosphere. The pollutant effects must be addressed to give us 21st century emancipation and readiness. It is time to examine and hold educational reform as the protagonist spurring the movement forward for repair.

     In  the T&T School System:  Testing and no conversations about visual schools are short circuiting the Education process. These wounds are embracing a conscience of guilt within our people. It is dividing our people into color codes of mass destruction. Think of Sports as the protagonist to life beyond standardized testing. Take an egotistical look into your mirror of self. This platform should galvanize a restorative and courageous corrective to the national tête-à-tête about education reform.

The TTOC has no right to develop a Track & Field plan

The TTOC has no right to develop a Track & Field plan!
This is not the function of the TTOC. To attempt to do this is to undercut the functions of its affiliates. This takes away their ability to plan and develop their own discipline. The TTOC has all the Olympic sports under their jurisdiction. Why single a Track&Field bias?
The IOC's function/role is to:

1.) Encourage and support the promotion of ethics in sport as well as education of youth through sport and to dedicate its efforts to ensuring that, in sport, the spirit of fair play prevails and violence is banned;
2.) Encourage and support the organization, development and coordination of sport and sports competitions;
3.) Ensure the regular celebration of the Olympic Games;
4.) Cooperate with the competent public or private organizations and authorities in the endeavor to place sport at the service of humanity and thereby to promote peace;
5.)Take action in order to strengthen the unity and to protect the independence of the Olympic Movement;
6.) Act against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic Movement;
7.) Encourage and support the promotion of women in sport at all levels and in all structures with a view to implementing the principle of equality of men and women;
8.) Lead the fight against doping in sport;
9.) Encourage and support measures protecting the health of athletes;
10.) Oppose any political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes;
11.) Encourage and support the efforts of sports organizations and public authorities to provide for the social and professional future of athletes;
12.) Encourage and support the development of sport for all;
13.) Encourage and support a responsible concern for environmental issues, to promote sustainable development in sport and to require that the Olympic Games are held accordingly;
14.) Promote a positive legacy from the Olympic Games to the host cities and host countries;
15.) Encourage and support initiatives blending sport with culture and education;
16.) Encourage and support the activities of the International Olympic Academy (IOA) and other institutions which dedicate themselves to Olympic education.

The TTOC has no right to develop a Track & Field plan. They should encourage and facilitate the National Governing Bodies to produce these plans as that is their remit. The issue is that the Michael Johnson program is laudable but untimely. The methodologies for those plans are based on a pathway model from cradle to grave. The cradle starts with talent id and development. If we cannot get that part right how on earth we can get the high performance right. This requires a proper structure, systems; technology that is cutting edge, in-depth research, equipment, coaching, strength training, and conditioning that is also cutting edge, sport science personnel and qualified sport medicine doctors, a long-term athlete development plan, and major capital injection. A seamless approach of harnessing athletes coming through primary and secondary schools. A philosophy of being Coach driven, athlete centered, and administratively supported.
Should The TTOC position itself to be a facilitator? Yes!
The question presupposes that the TTOC:
1.      Is not participating in the self-promotion episodes of its President Brian Lewis.
2.      Focuses on Olympism and the structure of good governance utilizing parliamentary protocols.
3.      Showcase the singleness of sports development purposes.
4.      In some form or another will engage its affiliates in profound conversations.
5.      Cancel meaningless, unadvertised, untimely and non-relevant workshops.
6.      Consider the basic dynamics of the IOC in all-inclusive dialogue with the Sports Company, Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Education, NSOs, clubs and local institutions of higher learning.
 There are currently about 160 IOC affiliates, their national Olympic Committee have some vested interest in the Olympics.
Some also have different objectives. Some are just happy to be IOC members. Some only represent their country or sport in name .Yet others are trying to steer business their way. Some are authoritarians who just want power. Mix all these combustible ingredients in a loose, free-flowing structure and you never know what you'll get. This illuminates how the TTOC has made some idiotic decisions such as: Handling: the Rio 2016 Chef de Mission Issue. The Rio 2016 Gymnastic Issue ,the cycling Issue ,The Rio 2016 damage control Issue ,The Rio 2016 NSO reports. The isolation of NSOs other than NAAA .The projected dependence on Track & Field only for international medals. The 10/24 Gold Medal Issue. The Michael Johnson Visit with Track& Field bias. Etc.
What is the motivation of the TTOC President Brian Lewis?

CONGRATULATIONS! Age Group and special awardees at the annual Abilene Wildcats Athletic Club Awards ceremony pose with their trophies. The Awards ceremony took place at the Arima West Government Primary School Arima Old Road, Arima on December 10. (Photo courtesy: CLAYTON CLARKE /Sportscore Tobago)
President of Abilene Athletics Club, Shedley Branche is praising the parents of the athletes for the club’s accomplishments. “Many of you have parents who have supported you all throughout your development and I am sure I have and will continue to sacrifice tremendously to see you reach your goal”, said Branche, who addressed the membership at the club’s annual award ceremony at the Arima West Government Primary School, Arima Old Road, Arima, on December 10.
Branche called on the athletes to be disciplined towards their training in order to achieve success. He told the gathering which was fill with past, present and future athletes, “Discipline is the bridge between talent and ultimate success. Discipline is what is going to bring you out at 5 o’clock in the morning to run the hills and practice your starts and baton exchanges over and over until you get it right. Discipline also is what is going to make you attractive to your future employers after your track days are long behind you.”
He also commended the coaching staff and administration for their contributions to the club’s accomplishment in the past year.
Abilene Wildcats heroes
The Abilene Wildcats Athletic Club is celebrating a successful year in track and field in 2016. The 53-year-old club fielded five members on T&T’s team to the Rio Olympics Games, the most by a club. Janiel Bellille, Reyare Thomas, Kyle Greaux, Deon Lendore and Jereem Richards now brings the number of club athletes who have compete at the Olympic Games to 15.
Coach Charles Joseph, who was also in Rio on the T&T coaching staff, was a member of the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympic teams. The club’s first Olympian was its founder Dr Cliff Bertrand.
T&T’s first woman Olympic competitor, Laura Pierre, was also a Abilene Wildcats member.
The full list of Abilene Wildcats Olympians over the years were: Dr Cliff Bertrand (Tokyo-1964), Winston Short (Mexico City, 1968), Dr Lennox Yearwood (Mexico City, 1968), Charles Joseph (Munich-1972, Montreal-1976, Moscow-1980), Laura Pierre (Munich-1972), Ainsley Armstrong (Munich-1972, Montreal-1976), Anthony Husbands (Montreal-1976), Andrew Bruce (Moscow-1980), Michael Paul (Moscow-1980), Caryle Bernard (Los Angeles-1984), Deon Lendore (London-2012, Rio de Janeiro-2016), Janiel Bellille (London-2012, Rio de Janeiro-2016), Reyare Thomas (Rio de Janeiro-2016), Kyle Greaux (Rio de Janeiro-2016), and Jereem Richards (Rio de Janeiro-2016).
Bellille competed at the 2012 Olympic Games while a member of the Neon Tracks Athletic club. Lendore has won the club’s lone Olympic medal, bronze, when he anchored T&T’s men’s 4x400m team to third place at the London Olympics four years ago. The club is also the largest in the country at the moment with a membership of 164.
In Rio, Bellille was a semifinalist in the women’s 400m hurdles while Greaux (men’s 200m), Thomas (women’s 200m) and Lendore (men’s 400m/4x400m) competed in the heats. Richards (mens 4x400m), Thomas (women’s 4x100m) and Greaux (men’s 4x100m) were also part of relay pools.
Four Abilene athletes, Adel Colthrust, Avindale Smith, Che Lara, Josiah Edwards, competed at the Carifta Games in Grenada. Colthrust (boys under 18 100m) and Lara (boys under 18 4x400m) returned home with bronze.
Sports reporter urges athletes to have a dream
The feature speaker of the ceremony was sports reporter Kwame Laurence, who encouraged the athletes to have a vision for success.
He said: “Do you have a dream? If the answer is no that needs to change today. Everyday you go out to train you must move one stride closer to realising your dreams. Coaches, parents and administrators you have a responsibility to help the athletes catch a vision. God expects us to have big dreams for ourselves and for others. Hold on to your dreams and achieve greatness.”
Laurence, further cited examples of great athletes who kept focussed on their goals despite initial disappointments.
He made mention of a few and said, “Michael Jordan is (considered) the greatest basketballer of all time and did not make his high school A team in his sophomore year. He was considered too short but he held on to his dream. He could have given up at that stage. Thankfully, he held on to his dream, had a great season with his high school B team and make the A team the following year. He then developed into a sporting legend.”
Laurence also shared that former top T&T sprinter Ato Boldon overcame a poor showing at his first Olympics Games and went on to win four Olympic medals.
He said: “Ato Boldon would tell you that he did not have a great performance at his first Olympics in Barcelona, Spain in 1992. He will also tell you that the newspaper headlines that followed that performance ‘Boldon flatters to deceive’ inspired him. It is now history that Boldon went on to become T&T’s most prolific Olympian with four medals.”
Meanwhile, Ephraim Serrette, who was recently re-elected to head the National Association of Athletic Administration (NAAA), also congratulated the club on its success both on and off the field, he said, “I want to congratulate Abilene Wildcats. Fifty-three years are lots of years. I want to say to the athletes congratulations on the season and I look forward to seeing you in 2017. Continue to represent your club to best of your ability.”
He added, that track and field has had a big impact in his life. “As a former athlete I want to say to the younger athletes that track and field has done a lot for me. If not for track and field I am not too sure where I would have been today.”

The Michael Johnson's Visit Should create significant learning experiences

The Michael Johnson’s Visit should create significant learning experiences.
His proven success and lifetime achievements, have given him the credibility to share his thoughts and ideas
The event will provide for interesting conversations well into 2017.
 Johnson can only contribute in a meaningful way:
1.      If we had some structure in place for expansion in collaboration with the NAAA.
2.      If our coaches were not deficient in their preparation.
3.      If there was not a controlled group designed for emergency gathering.
4.      If it involves the NAAA and affiliates.
5.      If the target audience had meaningful notification and significance.
6.      If there will be meaningful distribution of information to the people intended to benefit.
7.      If it has the blessings of the Ministry of Sports.
8.       If it has the Ministry of Education.
 Team TTO Rio 2016 review process. Isn’t  this a waste of meaningful time, involvement and constructive opportunity?
10 Golds by 2024 as a TTOC objective. Isn’t it a high performance hallucination journey!
 “While searching for answers in a constructive and positive way”. The TTOC must see that NSOs’ put a developmental plan into action. Why isn’t the NAAA involved when their affiliates provided the main reason for Johnson’s visit? Without the Track & Field platform there is no TTOC, NAAA or Michael Johnson collaboration in T&T.
The NAAA has not extended invitations to coaches. Why? The TTOC and the NAAA should be working together on this project!
“Harnessing traditional high performance sport systems by using technology can radically change the way things have been done to benefit sports locally.” Can T&T participate in this conversation? Michael Johnson is a businessman is he selling his brand? What is the deal?
What do we have in place? At the end of the day this is good TTOC promotion and the TTOC’s attempted 2016 damage control.
Ten (10) Olympic gold medals by 2024- this statement was presented by the TTOC’s President Brian Lewis and echoed by many who should know better. This is just wishful thinking. Anyone wanting to achieve such a goal must formulate a plan that is Specific; Measurable; Attainable; Realistic; Time-bound. Hence the reason why this Wish, in isolation, remains just that, a wish.
It seems as though better sense wants to prevail. Would 2017 bring wisdom to move ahead, to place the cart in its proper position?

WHAT WOULD TRUMP SAY ABOUT THE NAAA ELECTIONS 2016?

The AGM was a disaster:
President Ephraim Serrette signed unseen on October 22nd 2016
There was shouting: Chairperson Ephraim Serrette vs Paul Voisin.
Crawford telling the Mustang delegate, Richard, to “shut up and sit down”
The chair allowed the ruckus to continue out of control.
Pulling: Michelle Pennie was grabbing the microphone from Paul Voisin while he was on the floor;
Dawn Washington joined the microphone pulling “tug- of –war”.
Chairman did not exercise control of the meeting. No comment!
The Ephraim Serrette’s Phantom appearance to signature the Adoption Document of the NAAA was not on the recorded minutes presented.
From the US election folio, if authorities  doesn't have to produce Emails, why should Allan Baboolal secretary of the NAAA produce the full Minutes of the 22ndOctober 2016?  Is this an emulators’ conspiracy?
Voter    fraud! Serious voter fraud in Virginia, New Hampshire and California generated a motive for a re-count. This constitutionally would not alter “the price of tea in China!” if not guilt-ridden; the NAAA deserved this opportunity to dispute.
So why isn't the media reporting on this issue?
1.   Serious bias –
2.   A larger problem!
3.   Standing mute because of intimidation by a force greater than integrity,
4.   Media silence because change is not important or necessary for the development of the sport
5.   Perhaps voluntary withdrawal in anticipation of future privileges.
6.   Soliciting a trip as media seat at international games with an NAAA approval .
 The issue of phantom clubs participation in the elections created a victory gallop for Ephraim Serrette’s NAAA slate.
 Would they have won easily and convincingly as they did if the smaller clubs were allowed to take part and not subjected to harassment! Questionable!
 It would have been  difficult  for the Ephraim Serrette Slate to win the so-called popular vote if intimidation  of smaller clubs had not  occurred and delegates privilege of the opposition denied an appearance at the AGM on the 26th October 12016.
The phantom clubs delegates who voted illegally are now engaged with the consequences of troubled consciences. So what! This is a national phenomenon!
The illusion is that in spite of the immovability of the Ephriam Serrette’s slate. In spite of the years of vacuum, in spite of the incarceration of the Jamaica report: “the way 2009”, despite the pellucidity and perceived good governance of the NAAA .
The clubs remain loyal and mummified by the “sheriff of Nottingham”. They were bought; consequently the action unlocked the Point Fortin highway to perpetuate the NAAA’S confidence game.
This act mitigated another opportunity for the NAAA to capitalize on the new payday initiative for each executive member to earn a service stipend for on the job performance with sponsorship money. This will happen without negative consequences, accountability or guarantee of performance result!
This activity poses a direct compromising threat to the development of athletics in T&T. The clubs have voted out of greed, intimidated loyalty and more noticeably for want of a favor, a trip, a token of appreciation, recommendation for IAAAF coaching course. They silently but not reluctantly accepted the yoked results and look the other way to the future with great anticipation of incentives.
The secretary Mr. Allan Baboolal is leaving a paid position of $12000 per month for the position of vice president at an undisclosed amount of money. This is a Red flag of concern!
The re-elected President Ephriam Serrette is proposing to restructure the constitution with undisclosed intent to control without censorship of Donated monies from sponsors, the Sports Company and the public to unknown pockets of labor.
Hillary's response: "That is horrifying. That is not the way our Republic, Democracy works. It has been around since 1962. 54 years! We've had intelligently rigged elections over the years!
 What happens beyond Rio 2016? We will, together, make T&T track & field great again! Check the 2016 T&F results: CARIFTA Games, Junior World Games, and Rio 2016 to mention a few meets. T&T Track & Field is at an all-time low. It is now on a layaway plan. There is no feeder system in place!
T&T will be non- competitive 2017-2024.  The Galileo plan 10/24 is a fantasy hallucination!
Let us give thanks for all that we have, and let us boldly face the exciting new frontiers of “the gold mines” that lie ahead. Negotiations with Puma and Nike is on the burner.
The computer popup suggests alleged impropriety. There should be an audit of expenditure of the Adidas and NGC account for misappropriation.
Who are the auditors of the NAAA? Boasting of his experience as an auditor President Ephraim Serrette is called to respond to the following: They could not be address at the 2016 AGM because the “celebrated Gold medalist” told the delegate who posed the question to “sit down and shut up!”  The ignorant behavior of a sports ambassador who lacks protocol etiquette.
Why was there a veil of secrecy regarding the Adidas contract? Why it was not circulated to all members of the Executive and further ventilated to the General Council? Why since 2013 the annual financial statements did not include details of expenditure re the Adidas income? Where are these funds held? Which bank and what is the account number? The athletic fraternity wants to know. Why has the Treasurer not acted in accordance with the constitution the supreme law of the association? Why has the Treasurer not presented monthly financial statements to the Executive? Why has quarterly statements not been presented to the General Council? This is a major breach of the Constitution and as a consequence requires the immediate resignation of the Treasurer. Why financial statements are not circulated at least one week prior to AGM ? Who are the auditors of the NAAA? It was said that the NAAA is a fraternity. Is another FIFA developing? The president boasts of 19 years’ experience as an auditor, it appears that it is 1 year experience 19 times.

Serrette dismisses talk of financial mis-management in NAAA

NAAA President Ephraime Serrette has denied allegations of financial impropriety in the NAAA (National Association of Athletic Administration) under his leadership. In the lead-up the the NAAA AGM and election of officers on Saturday, November, 29, Paul Voisin said as fourth Vice-president, he was no made aware of the details of the contract signed by the NAAA and Addidas. The contract is reported worth US $800,000 (TT$5.4 million ) and was signed by Serrette and First Vice-President George Commissiong on October 17, 2013  for the period January 1 2013 to December 31, 2016. Agreement became to be effect from January, 1, 2013. US$200,000 (TT $1.35million) plus vat was to be paid in two installments on April 15 and October 15 of that year. Among the use of the funding is provide equipment for each contract year.

Voisin (P ) is also asked Serrette to account for the US $192,000 (TT $1.3million) in bonuses that the NAAA received from the Addidas since 2013. Among the bonuses: US $20,000 following Jehue Gordon's gold medal in men's 400m hurdles at the 2013 World Championships and US$15,000 (men's 4x400m silver medal) and US$13,000 (women's 4x100m bronze medal) at the 2015 World Championships. In addition the US$103,000 from the 2015 Pan American Games (US$20,000-gold, US$15,000-silver and US$13,000-bronze). T&T won three gold medals, two silver and one bronze  in track and field. The sum of US$26,000 was paid for the two bronze medals won at the 2016 World Indoor Championships (Deon Lendore-men's 400m and men's 4x400m). In addition, following Keshorn Walcott's bronze medal in the men's javelin at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games the NAAA is set to receive US$15,000.

However, in response Serrette said all the executive members were kept up-to-date. "We have made information available to all executive members where contracts are concerned be it the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the National Gas Company and Addidas. It was just false allegations and this is coming from  people who sat around the table. I think it was just unfortunate that they would have gone that way to question accountability and transparency." Serrette added that the NAAA under his leadership have kept its records. "Under my stewardship we have been able to produce statements, audited statements too. Prior to that they were not statements far less for audited statements." He said he stands for accountability. "There is no question of accountability and transparency where that is concerned. When we talk about governance that is one of my major concerns. After spending 19 years in the Auditor General Department when you are talking accountability that is right up my alley." Serrette was speaking following his re-election at president on Saturday after defeat Paul Voisin 65-32.

Voisin (P ) also said he was not aware of the details of the the contract between National Gas Company and NAAA which was signed by Serrette and president of NGC Indar Maharaj to provide funding to the sum of TT$4 million dollars for the  period of January 2015 and December 17. The funding would be used for : Sports Development (TT750,000), Administrative Support and Servicing (TT$1,687,000), Total Participation Growth Programme (TT$500,000), High Performance (TT$713,000), Capacity Building ($350,000.

The contract states that NGC has undertaken to be a sponsor of the sport of track and field in Trinidad and Tobago from January 2015 to December 2017. The NAAA is seeking to develop the sport of track and field in Trinidad and Tobago thorough a programme which includes the improvement of governance, operational effectiveness and fostering generative relationships at the community and national levels. The parties agree that the responsibilities and obligations con tainted in the MOM are non transferable to any other party without the written agreement of the other party.

Voisin (P ) is contending that these details were not presented to the clubs nor were recorded in the minutes of NAAA.
